Be Inspired

In Honor Of Maya Angelou – A Rainbow In The Clouds

Maya Angelou is one of my hero’s – she is an awe inspiring person who has bought a huge amount of wonder and light into this beautiful world.

I saw a rainbow in the clouds today and thought that this small bit of inspiration from her is an appropriate memorial for her passing.

I received a very inspirational email from a friend this week. It requested that I send an inspirational poem or quote to a friend of hers and then to pass the message on to my group of friends.

It reminded me of the importance of those infrequently read pieces of literary art. Those uplifting poems and quotes that should be read more often, and shared. And it also reminded me of a promise I made to myself in January to share some of these artworks with you.

Going Against the Stream

I love this quote. And although I’m sure it speaks differently to different people, to me it confirms that going against the stream is the right way to go.  We don’t have to follow social norms, or do exactly what others are doing. Finding your own way and questioning things as you go along is the wise way forward.

The Buddha described the dharma as ‘going against the stream.’ As long as one swims with the current of a river, one remains unaware of it. But if one chooses to turn against it, suddenly it is revealed as a powerful, discomforting force. The ‘stream’ refers to the accumulated habits of conditioning. The practice of dharma means to turn around midstream, to observe mindfully and intelligently the forces of conditioning instead of impulsively reacting to their promptings.

Spacious Mind

Noticing the space around people and things provides a different way of looking at them, and developing this spacious view is a way of opening oneself. When one has a spacious mind, there is room for everything. When one has a narrow mind, there is room for only a few things.

– Ajahn Sumedho, “Noticing Space”
